Abortion and Gay Marriage.

I have your attention now, don’t I?

Everyone would agree that those two topics create more debate, interest, fear, anxiety and anger than any other topics in our cultural landscape. They are the so-called, “Hot Button” issues of our world.  Politicians will use them, then try their best to ignore them.  Americans will hold fast to them, but most do nothing meaningful about changing them.

Yet did you know at the root of both issues, is a person?  And not in a general sense either.  I’m talking about a literal individual person with a name, birth date and life story.

Her name is Norma McCorvey.

In 1969 she was pregnant and used as a pawn of two money-hungry lawyers to challenge the restrictions of abortion in Texas.  She was told to lie about being raped and her case went all the way to the Supreme Court in what is a now one of the most debated cases in U.S. history we know as “Roe V. Wade.”  She was Jane Roe.  Interestingly enough, she never even had an abortion.

Today she is Roe no more.  She is a Christian.  She wrote a book detailing her ordeal and subsequent 180 on the issue of abortion “rights”.  Today she fights for the unborn and a few years ago petitioned the court to retry the case on new evidence that the procedure hurts women.

There’s more… Did you also know, she is also a FORMER lesbian?  Yes, contrary to what the glowing box in your living room tells you, there are such things as former homosexuals.  And the former Jane Roe is one of them.  In 1989, at the end of her rope emotionally, she was taken in by a lesbian and engaged in that lifestyle for 5 years.

But in 1995 everything changed.  Christ reached down and saved her.  Today she publicly defends the unborn every chance she gets and credits the life change of Christ for her ability to walk away from a homosexual lifestyle.  This former tool of the enemy has been ransomed by God and given purpose and peace.

We have to remember two things:

First, behind the statistics, protests, marches, and agendas of the progressive secularization of America, there are pawns like Norma who are used and cast aside as soon as they’ve won their supposed “rights”.

Second: For every “Norma” out there is a Savior who will pick up the pieces the world has tossed aside.  He is the one who SAVES them, DELIVERS them, LOVES them and GIVES to them a meaning and a hope in living.

He is the God of the broken, and He won’t throw you away.

How marvelous!

Matthew 12:20–21 (ESV) a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; 21 and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”
