Three Feasts to the Lord: Exodus 23:14 (ESV) “Three times in the year you shall keep a feast to me. Firstfruits: Leviticus 23:9–11 (ESV) you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.
The Offering of First Fruits
Leviticus 23:9–11 (ESV) And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.
FIRSTFRUIT SHEAF
Deuteronomy 26:1–4 (ESV) “When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. 3 And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.’ 4 Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God.
FIRSTFRUIT OFFERING
Deuteronomy 26:9–11 (ESV) And He (the LORD) brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me.’ And you shall set it down before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God. 11 And you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.
They were to acknowledge the LAND was from God.
They were to acknowledge their INCREASE was from God. They were to live expectantly of the rest of the harvest.
FIRSTFRUIT SHEAF
The people were to bring God their BEST.
Exodus 23:19 (ESV) “The best of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God.
Numbers 18:12 (ESV) All the best of the oil and all the best of the wine and of the grain, the firstfruits of what they give to the Lord, I give to you (Aaron’s priestly family).
Who Gave the First?
Genesis 4:1–5 (ESV) 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
Rebirth
Ruth 1:22 (ESV) So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in- law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. And they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.
FIRSTFRUITS – Christ’s Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:1–5 (ESV) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
FIRSTFRUITS – Christ’s Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:12–19 (ESV) Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
1 Corinthians 15:20 (ESV) But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
FIRSTFRUITS – the Jews in the faith.
Romans 11:16 (ESV) If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
FIRSTFRUITS – the Spirit in us.
Romans 8:23 (ESV) And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

God Put Christ First
Colossians 1:17–18 (ESV) And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
Is Christ First in Us?
Proverbs 3:9–10 (ESV) Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; 10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.
Romans 12:1 (ESV) I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
Luke 21:1–4 (ESV) Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Biblical Devotion: Trusting God and Putting Him First
Scripture: Proverbs 3:9-10 (ESV) “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” Reflection The concept of firstfruits is deeply rooted in the agricultural practices of ancient Israel. The Israelites were instructed to bring the first and best portion of their harvest to God as an act of worship and trust. This was more than just a ritual; it was a declaration of faith. By offering the firstfruits, they acknowledged God as the source of all their blessings and expressed their trust in His provision for the rest of the harvest. In our lives today, the principle of firstfruits goes beyond agricultural produce. It encompasses our time, talents, resources, and even our decisions. When we prioritize God and put Him first in every area of our lives, we are essentially saying, “Lord, I trust You. I believe that You will take care of me and provide for all my needs.” Jesus: The Ultimate Firstfruits The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, refers to Jesus as the “firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Jesus’ resurrection is the first and most significant part of the greater harvest to come—the resurrection of all believers. Just as the firstfruits offering in the Old Testament was a promise of the full harvest, Jesus’ resurrection is a promise of our future resurrection and eternal life. Application 1. Evaluate Your Priorities: Take a moment to reflect on your daily routines, financial decisions, and how you spend your time. Are you giving God the first and best of what you have, or is He getting the leftovers? 2. Trust in God’s Provision: Trusting God with your firstfruits requires faith. It might seem risky to give away your first and best, but remember that God’s supply is limitless. He promises that if we honor Him with our firstfruits, He will ensure that our needs are met abundantly. 3. Practical Steps: – Time: Start your day with prayer and Bible reading. Give God the first part of your day before the busyness sets in. – Talents: Use your skills and gifts to serve in your church or community. Dedicate your abilities to God’s service. – Resources: Tithe faithfully. Consider supporting missions, ministries, or those in need as an act of worship and trust. Questions to Consider / Journal Prompts 1. Reflect on Priorities: – What are the first things you typically do in your day? How might you reorder your schedule to prioritize time with God? 2. Evaluate Trust: – In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to trust God? What steps can you take to surrender these areas to Him? 3. Consider Generosity: – How can you honor God with the firstfruits of your resources? What changes can you make in your giving habits to reflect this principle? 4. Personal Experiences: – Have you experienced a time when you felt God provided abundantly after you chose to put Him first? Write about this experience and how it impacted your faith. 5. Practical Changes: – What practical steps can you take this week to demonstrate that God is your first priority in your daily life, work, and relationships? Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for being the source of all my blessings. Help me to honor You with the first and best of everything You have given me. Strengthen my faith to trust in Your provision and goodness. May my life reflect a heart that puts You first in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Conclusion Living by the principle of firstfruits is a powerful way to demonstrate our trust in God and our commitment to His kingdom. As we give Him the first and best of our time, talents, and resources, we will experience His abundant provision and grow deeper in our faith.
