About This Project

He was dying of AIDS, his organs were failing, and doctors told his family to say goodbye. Then Mark Nelson cried out one name: Jesus.

He was dying of AIDS.

His viral load had climbed above 4 million. His CD4 count was four. His organs were failing, and doctors told his family there was nothing more they could do.

Then Mark Nelson cried out one name:

Jesus.

And everything changed.

In this powerful episode of The Deep End Podcast, Pastor Tim Hatch sits down with Mark Nelson of Exchange Ministries to hear his extraordinary Christian testimony of same-sex attraction, homosexuality, HIV and AIDS, a 22-day coma, and the moment he says Jesus Christ completely transformed his life.

This is more than a conversation about sexuality.

It is a story about the spiritual battle for a soul—and the power of Jesus to save.

📌 Key Themes & Insights

From the Church to a Life He Never Expected

Mark Nelson grew up in a Christian home during the charismatic movement of the 1970s and 1980s. His parents were passionate followers of Jesus, and Mark experienced church, prayer, evangelism, and the work of the Holy Spirit from an early age.

But at 13 years old, a painful encounter with a pastor left him confused and wounded.

After rumors spread that Mark was gay, the pastor attempted to perform a deliverance. When the pastor commanded a spirit to “get out” and “don’t come back,” 13-year-old Mark believed those words were directed at him.

He walked away from church that night and vowed never to return.

Soon, Mark says, his mind became overwhelmed with sexual thoughts and same-sex attraction.

He began using alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs to numb himself.

Same-Sex Relationships and the Search for Acceptance

When Mark arrived at Florida State University, he found groups that affirmed his sexual identity and encouraged him to “live his truth.”

He began having sexual encounters with men and eventually entered a committed same-sex relationship.

At the same time, Mark built a successful professional life and even worked for Florida Governor Jeb Bush.

But behind the public career was a private spiritual struggle.

In 2004, while organizing a hurricane prayer service, Mark heard Franklin Graham preach John 3:16.

For the first time, Mark says he understood the love of God in a deeply personal way.

He felt convicted.

He wanted to follow Jesus.

But the battle was not over.

Can an LGBT-Affirming Church Lead People Away From Repentance?

After experiencing conviction, Mark began attending an LGBT-affirming church.

There, he was taught that his same-sex relationship could be blessed by God as long as the relationship demonstrated the fruit of the Spirit.

The message, Mark says, focused on affirmation rather than repentance.

Pastor Tim and Mark discuss a difficult question facing the modern Church:

What happens when a church tells people they can follow Jesus without submitting their sexuality to Scripture?

The kindness of God leads us to repentance.

But repentance requires surrender.

Dying of AIDS, Mark Cried Out to Jesus

By late 2007, Mark’s health was rapidly deteriorating.

He struggled to breathe. He lost significant weight. His balance failed. Eventually, doctors discovered double pneumonia and advanced HIV/AIDS.

Mark’s viral load was over 4 million.

His CD4 count was four.

His organs were failing.

Doctors told him he was going to die.

Mark was placed on life support and remained in a coma for 22 days as his family prayed, fasted, spoke Scripture, and called on the name of Jesus.

Then Mark pulled the life-support tube from his throat.

He describes entering a dark place, seeing the choices and relationships that had separated him from God, and hearing countless voices crying for help.

Mark did the only thing he could think to do.

He cried out:

“Jesus.”

Mark says he immediately heard the words, “I’m here.”

What happened next changed his life forever.

The Power of the Name of Jesus

Mark describes experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit and an immediate transformation in his mind and body.

The desires that had controlled him were gone.

His organs began to recover.

His lungs, which doctors believed were permanently scarred, later showed no scarring.

Mark says his AIDS diagnosis became HIV—and the virus has remained undetectable since 2008.

After leaving the hospital, Mark surrendered his life completely to Jesus Christ.

Later that year, he married his wife, Beth.

His testimony is simple:

Jesus still saves.

Jesus still transforms.

And the name of Jesus still has power.

Helping People Struggling With LGBT Identity

Today, Mark and his wife serve through Exchange Ministries in Orlando, Florida.

The ministry works with churches, individuals struggling with LGBT identity, and parents whose children identify as gay or transgender.

Mark believes the Church cannot abandon people struggling with sexuality.

Pastors must speak biblical truth.

Christians must be willing to enter difficult and messy situations.

And parents must continue loving, praying for, and remaining connected to their children without abandoning the truth of Scripture.

Mark offers parents three principles:

  • Be consistent. Parents must remain united and rooted in biblical truth.
  • Be compassionate. Listen, ask questions, stay connected, and continue loving your child.
  • Remember who completes the work. Only the Holy Spirit can truly transform a human heart.

📖 Theological Insights

  • The kindness of God leads us to repentance.
  • Christians must take every thought captive to obey Christ.
  • Biblical repentance requires submission to God.
  • Confession brings sin into the light and opens the door to healing.
  • The Church must speak truth about God’s design for sexuality while loving people with compassion.
  • Parents cannot transform their children; only the Holy Spirit can change a heart.
  • Scripture is not merely meant to be read—it should shape how Christians pray, think, and fight spiritual battles.
  • Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
  • No person is beyond the transforming power of Jesus Christ.

Mark’s story is not ultimately about homosexuality.

It is not about politics.

It is not even primarily about AIDS.

It is about Jesus.

The same Jesus who met Mark in his darkest moment is still calling people out of darkness today.

🌎 Cultural Relevance

This episode speaks directly into some of the most difficult conversations facing Christians and churches today:

  • Christian testimonies of leaving homosexuality
  • Same-sex attraction and the Christian faith
  • LGBT-affirming churches and biblical repentance
  • HIV, AIDS, and Mark Nelson’s testimony
  • God’s design for sexuality and marriage
  • Parents of LGBT and transgender children
  • Churches ministering to people struggling with sexual identity
  • The role of pastors in teaching biblical sexuality
  • Spiritual warfare and taking thoughts captive
  • The power of prayer and speaking Scripture
  • Exchange Ministries and Christian LGBT outreach
  • The transforming power of Jesus Christ

The Church cannot run from these conversations.

People are walking into churches searching for truth.

Parents are watching their children struggle.

Christians are wrestling privately with same-sex attraction and sexual identity.

Silence is not compassion.

The Church must be willing to speak the truth, remain present, and point people to the transforming power of Jesus.
