“The Feasts of Israel”

Part 4 – Weeks “Shavuot”

Three Feasts to the Lord:

Exodus 23:14 (ESV) “Three times in the year you shall keep a feast to me.

The Feast of Weeks

Leviticus 23:15–17 (ESV) “You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering. 16 You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the Lord. 17 You shall bring from your dwelling places two loaves of bread to be waved, made of two tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour, and they shall be baked with leaven, as firstfruits to the Lord.

Leviticus 23:18–20 (ESV) And you shall present with the bread seven lambs a year old without blemish, and one bull from the herd and two rams. They shall be a burnt offering to the Lord, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 19 And you shall offer one male goat for a sin offering, and two male lambs a year old as a sacrifice of peace offerings. 20 And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits as a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs.

They shall be holy to the Lord for the priest.

Leviticus 23:21–22 (ESV) And you shall make a proclamation on the same day. You shall hold a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a statute forever in all your dwelling places throughout your generations. 22 “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.”

The Purpose of the Feast
God’s Provision – the harvest has fully begun.
Leaven Returns – enjoyment of God’s gifts from the land. Gathering in homes – fellowship.
Gleanings for the poor – generosity.

Judgment at Sinai
Exodus 32:25–28 (ESV) And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27 And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.’ ” 28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell.

Shavout – Pentecost
Acts 1:8 (ESV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 2:1–4 (ESV) When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:5–8 (ESV) Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?

Acts 2:14–15 (ESV) But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.

Acts 2:8–11 (ESV) And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

Shavout – Pentecost

Acts 2:37–40 (ESV) Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”

New Hearts

Ezekiel 11:19–20 (ESV) And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Ezekiel 36:26–27 (ESV) And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

New Life

Acts 2:41 (ESV) So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

New Harvest

Acts 2:42–47 (ESV) And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

What is the Text Teaching?

Shavout FULFILLED in US

  1. We are saved from the inside out. God, through the Spirit, gives us NEW HEARTS.

2 Corinthians 3:3 (ESV) And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

  1. The Law brings death, the Spirit brings Life.

2 Corinthians 3:6 (ESV) (He) has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

  1. The Empowerment for BOLDNESS in the Gospel.

2 Corinthians 3:7–8 (ESV) Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory?

2 Corinthians 3:12 (ESV) Since we have such a hope, we are very bold,

  1. Continued Transformation one degree of glory to the next.

2 Corinthians 3:17–18 (ESV) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Am I Filled with the Spirit?

Based on Shavout and the Holy Spirits Arrival

2 Corinthians 5:18–20 (ESV) All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

A Church Filled with the Spirit

HARMONY in FELLOWHIP

Ephesians 5:18–21 (ESV) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

KNOWING God’s Will:

Colossians 1:9 (ESV) And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

BOLDNESS in EVANGELISM

Acts 4:31 (ESV) And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

GIFTS for the BUILDING of the BODY

1 Corinthians 12:7–11 (ESV) To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Now is the time to receive the Holy Spirit!

Devotion: Embracing the Fullness of the Holy Spirit

Scripture Reading:
Leviticus 23:15-17 (ESV)
“You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the Lord. You shall bring from your dwelling places two loaves of bread to be waved, made of two tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour, and they shall be baked with leaven, as firstfruits to the Lord.”

Acts 2:1-4 (ESV)
“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Reflection:
In the deep dive into Leviticus 23 and Acts 2, we uncover the profound significance of the Feast of Weeks, also known as Shavuot or Pentecost. This festival marks a time of celebrating the harvest and acknowledging God’s provision. More importantly, it foreshadows the coming of the Holy Spirit, a promise fulfilled in Acts 2 when the disciples were filled with the Spirit on Pentecost.

God desires for us to go beyond merely knowing the Bible, attending church, and living as “good Christians.” He calls us to experience a life filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. This power brings confidence, community, conviction, and a deep commitment to the cause of Christ. The Holy Spirit equips us with spiritual gifts to contribute to the church and enables us to experience the abundant life God created us for.

Application:
1. Confidence in Christ: The Holy Spirit gives us boldness to share the gospel and live out our faith. Reflect on how you can step out in faith today, trusting the Spirit’s guidance.

2. Community and Fellowship: Like the early church, let us devote ourselves to fellowship, breaking bread together, and supporting one another. Seek opportunities to connect with fellow believers and build each other up.

3. Generosity: Just as the Feast of Weeks included provisions for the poor, let us be generous with our resources. Look for ways to serve those in need within your community.

4. Commitment to God’s Word: The Holy Spirit instills a love for God’s Word. Dedicate time each day to reading and meditating on Scripture, allowing it to transform your heart and mind.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Fill us afresh with Your Spirit today, empowering us to live boldly for You. Help us to foster genuine community, be generous with our resources, and remain committed to Your Word. May our lives reflect the fullness of the Spirit, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
