“The Feasts of Israel”

Part 5 – Feast of Trumpets Prophecy: Christ’s Return & The Rapture Explained

1 Thessalonians 4:16–18 (ESV) For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

“Rosh Hashanah” “Head of the year”

“Yom Teruah” “Day of Shouting”

Three Pilgrimage Feasts:

Exodus 23:14 (ESV) “Three times in the year you shall keep a feast to me.

The Feast of Trumpets

Leviticus 23:23–25 (ESV) And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets, a holy convocation. 25 You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall present a food offering to the Lord.”

Facts: Feast of Trumpets

Numbers 29:1–6 (ESV) “On the first day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a day for you to blow the trumpets, 2 and you shall offer a burnt offering, for a pleasing aroma to the LORD: one bull from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish; 3 also their grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, three tenths of an ephah for the bull, two tenths for the ram, 4 and one tenth for each of the seven lambs; 5 with one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you; 6 besides the burnt offering of the new moon, and its grain offering, and the regular burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offering, according to the rule for them, for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the LORD.

Trumpets in the Old Testament:

–          To sound alarms for Israel (Numbers 10:5–6; Ezekiel 33:3; Joel 2:1)

–          To call the people to assemble (Exodus 19:13; Psalm 81:4–6)

–          To announce a Jubilee year (Leviticus 25:9–10)

–          When making offerings and sacrifices (Numbers 10:10)

–          To prepare the way for military cam- paigns (Numbers 10:9; 2 Chronicles 3:12; Judges 7:22)

–          To wage war (Joshua 6:4–20)

–          For temple worship and praise (2 Chronicles 15:14; Psalm 47:6; 89:16)

Trumpets Announce God’s Presence:

Exodus 19:10–13 (ESV) the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments 11 and be ready for the third day.

For on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, ‘Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.”

Exodus 19:16 (ESV) On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.

Exodus 19:18–19 (ESV) Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. 19 And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.

Purpose of the Feast of Trumpets

Psalm 98:6 (ESV) With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD!

Purpose of the Feast of Trumpets

  1. To awaken God’s people for great events to come.
  2. To call God’s people to repentance and worship.
  3. To direct God’s people for action.
  4. To anticipate the sweetness of the year ahead.

Yom Teruah – “The Hidden Day”

–          Hebrew months were either 29 or 30 days long, and the exact timing depended on the moon cycle.

–          Yom Teruah officially began once two witnesses confirmed the first sliver of the new moon.

–          Yom Teruah became known by other names, like “The Hidden Day” and “The Day and the Hour No Man Knows.”

Yom Teruah – “The Hidden Day”

Matthew 24:36–39 (ESV) “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

Mark 13:32–34 (ESV) “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.

Trumpet Voice of God

1 Corinthians 15:52 (ESV) in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 (ESV) For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Revelation 11:15 (ESV) Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

The True Trumpet Voice:

Revelation 1:10 (ESV) I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

Psalm 89:15–16 (ESV) Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face, 16 who exult in your name all the day and in your righteousness are exalted.

John 10:27 (ESV) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

What is the Text Teaching?

Trumpets will be FULFILLED

  1. We must prepare our heart with repentance and gathering.

Hebrews 10:25 (ESV) not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

  1. We remember the resurrection yet to come in Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:52 (ESV) in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

  1. We remember the rapture of the church.

Matthew 24:31 (ESV) And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

  1. We must be ready for that “hidden” day.

Matthew 24:42 (ESV) Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

  1. We will see the kingdom of God absorb the kingdoms of this world.

Revelation 11:15 (ESV) Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.

Remain Sober and Alert

1 Thessalonians 5:2–6 (ESV) For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.

Pursue Holiness and Godliness

2  Peter 3:11–12 (ESV) Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!

Patiently Await His Return

James 5:7–8 (ESV) Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

Diligent in Faith and Service

Luke 12:35–37 (ESV) “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.

Devotion: The Call of the Trumpet

Scripture Reading:

Leviticus 23:23–25 (ESV): “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with a blast of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall present a food offering to the Lord.'”

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 (ESV): “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”

Reflection:

The Feast of Trumpets is a powerful reminder of the intersection between the past, present, and future in God’s divine plan. In ancient Israel, the trumpet was used to signal significant events, call the people to worship, and alert them to prepare for what was to come. In the same way, the prophetic symbolism of the trumpet blast is meant to awaken us to the reality of Christ’s imminent return.

As believers living in the “Church Age,” we stand between the fulfilled prophecies of the spring feasts and the anticipated events of the fall feasts. The sound of the trumpet calls us to prepare our hearts, to live with an eternal perspective, and to remain vigilant and hopeful as we await the return of our King.

Application:

  1. Live with Expectation: Just as the Israelites waited for the sound of the trumpet to guide their next steps, we too should live with an eager expectation of Christ’s return. This anticipation should influence our daily choices, attitudes, and relationships.
  2. Prepare Your Heart: The trumpet’s call was also a call to repentance and renewal. Take time to reflect on areas of your life where you may need to realign with God’s will. Seek His forgiveness and embrace the renewal that comes from a repentant heart.
  3. Encourage One Another: The promise of Christ’s return is a source of great hope. Share this hope with others, especially in a world that often seems to be spiraling into chaos. Be a beacon of light, encouraging others to look forward to the glorious future that awaits all who are in Christ.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of Your Son’s return. Help us to live with hearts full of expectation, eager for the day when we will be with You forever. As we hear the spiritual call of the trumpet, may we be ready—repentant, renewed, and filled with hope. Guide us to encourage and uplift others with the truth of Your Word, and may we be found faithful when the day of Your return comes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought for the Day:

The sound of the trumpet is a call to awaken, to prepare, and to hope. Let its echo resonate in your heart today as you live in the light of Christ’s return.

Engage:

Share this devotion with someone who might need encouragement about the future.

Meditate on the sound of the trumpet in your quiet time. What does it symbolize for you in your spiritual walk?

Call to Action:

Stay Vigilant: Keep watch and pray, making sure your heart is ready for Christ’s return.

Connect with Community: Join or form a group to study biblical prophecy together, encouraging one another as the day approaches.

Spread Hope: Share the message of Christ’s return with someone who may feel hopeless or uncertain about the future.

Questions/Journal Prompts:

  1. What does the trumpet symbolize in your life today?
  2. How are you preparing for the return of Christ? Are there areas in your life that need realignment?
  3. How can you encourage someone else to live with hope and expectation for Christ’s return?
  4. Reflect on a time when you felt the “call of the trumpet” in your spiritual journey. What did it lead you to do or change in your life?
  5. What steps can you take this week to live more fully in anticipation of Christ’s return?

Take time to prayerfully consider these questions and journal your responses. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and reflections as you seek to live a life filled with His presence and power.
