Matthew 1:1-17 – The Genealogy of the King
No one is too far from God’s grace! The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 isn’t just a list of names—it’s a powerful testimony of
redemption, inclusion, and God’s faithfulness. From Abraham to David, from exiles to kings, God was weaving a story that ultimately leads to Jesus.
📌 Key Verse
Matthew 1:1 (ESV) –
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
🔍 Matthew’s Background & Purpose
- Matthew (Levi) was a tax collector, despised by fellow Jews but chosen by Jesus.
- His name means “Gift of God” or “Gift of Jehovah.”
- He references the Old Testament over 100 times, writing primarily to a Jewish audience to prove Jesus as the Messiah.
- He is one of twelve people in history who walked with God in the flesh, observing His miracles and teachings firsthand.
✨ How Do You Bridge the Old & New Testaments?
Jesus is the Fulfillment of Prophecy
Matthew begins his Gospel by tracing Jesus’
royal lineage back to
David and Abraham, showing that:
✔️
Jesus is the promised King (Son of David)
✔️
Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s covenant (Son of Abraham)
All Study of the Bible is a Study of Jesus
- Colossians 2:2-3 – In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- 1 Corinthians 1:24, 30 – Jesus is the power, wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption of God.
- John 14:6 – Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life—no one comes to the Father except through Him.

God’s promise never failed!
📜 The Post-Monarchy Period
➡
Zerubbabel → Abiud → Jacob → Joseph (husband of Mary)
Even through
exile and silence, God was still working.

💡 Lessons from the Genealogy of Jesus
1️⃣ Jesus Redeems Broken Stories
👑
Tamar – Betrayed, yet included in the Messiah’s line (Genesis 38:6-26)
👑
Rahab – A former prostitute who became a faithful follower of God (Joshua 2:12-14, 6:25)
👑
Ruth – A Moabite woman, once an outsider, brought into the family of God (Ruth 4:9-10)
👑
Bathsheba – Her story was one of scandal, but through her, Jesus came (2 Samuel 11)
2️⃣ God’s Grace is Woven Into History
From
imperfect patriarchs to
flawed kings to
faithful women, God’s plan remained
unchanged—to bring

Matthew repeatedly states, “This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophets…”

4️⃣ We Find Our Story in God’s Story
God works through
ordinary, broken, and unexpected people to

🔢 Numbers in the Names: God’s Divine Plan
Matthew 1:17 (ESV) –
So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
📌
3 sets of 14 (or 6 sets of 7) – A pattern of divine completion.
📌
Jesus is the 7th “week” – The fulfillment of time.
💡
Revelation 11:2 (NLT) –
The nations will trample the holy city for 42 months (6×7), pointing forward to Jesus’ return.
