“The Feasts of Israel”

Part 6 – Day of Atonement: “Yom Kippur”

We NEED ATONEMENT

Yom Kippur – the holiest day in the Jewish calendar

The NEED for Atonement:

  1. Between Ourselves and God.
  2. Between Ourselves and Each Other.
  3. Between Ourselves and our own Heart.

What is Atonement?

ATONEMENT The means of reconciliation

between God and people. Emerges in the Old Testament as part of the sacrificial system; reframed exclusively around the person and work of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

(kāpar). vb. to atone, make atonement, cover, appease, expiate.

“expiate” – removing guilt, particularly the undoing of sin.

At-one-ment

The Day of Atonement

Leviticus 23:26–29 (ESV) And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord. 28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For whoever is not afflicted on that very day shall be cut off from his people.

Leviticus 23:30–32 (ESV) And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. 32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”

Leviticus 16

Leviticus 16:3–5 (ESV) But in this way Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on. 5 And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

Leviticus 16:6–10 (ESV) “Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. 7 Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord and use it as a sin offering, 10 but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.

Leviticus 16:11–14 (ESV) “Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. 12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil 13 and put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die. 14 And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

Leviticus 16:15–19 (ESV) “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. 16 Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. 17 No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel. 18 Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. 19 And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.

Leviticus 16:20–22 (ESV) “And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. 22 The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.

Leviticus 16:23–28 (ESV) “Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and shall take off the linen garments that he put on when he went into the Holy Place and shall leave them there. 24 And he shall bathe his body in water in a holy place and put on his garments and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And the fat of the sin offering he shall burn on the altar. 26 And he who lets the goat go to Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. 27 And the bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp. Their skin and their flesh and their dung shall be burned up with fire. 28 And he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

Procedure of the Atoning Sacrifice:

  1. Preparation of the High Priests – Special garments and bathed.
  2. Sin offering for the High Priest – one bull for he and his household.
  3. Selection of the goats – By lot one would be sacrificed.
  4. Sacrifice of the chosen goat – cleansing the holy place.
  5. Scapegoat – sin pronounced over and sent away (Azazel).
  6. High Priests bathes, changes to regular clothes offers burnt offering.
  7. Burning the Sacrificed goat and bull.

The Problem: No Temple/Sacrifice/Priesthood in Jerusalem since 70 A.D.

True Atonement.

Hebrews 9:11–14 (ESV) But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Atonement in the New Testament

2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 Peter 3:18 (ESV) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

Ephesians 1:7 (ESV) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Romans 5:10–11 (ESV) For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Cosmic Calendar:

Passover – Christ is sacrificed.

Unleavened Bread – Christ is buried.

First Fruits – Christ is raised.

Pentecost – The Harvest Begins.

Trumpets – Christ Returns.

Atonement – Our Physical Reunion with God

What is the Text Teaching?

Atonement is/will be FULFILLED

  1. Perfect Atonement

Hebrews 10:4 (ESV) it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

  1. Christ as the Ultimate High Priest:

Hebrews 9:11–12 (ESV) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

  1. Once-for-All Sacrifice

Hebrews 9:28 (ESV) Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many

  1. The Scapegoat

Psalm 103:12 (ESV) as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

  1. Access to God’s Presence

Matthew 27:51 (ESV) And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

  1. Reconciliation with God

2 Corinthians 5:19 (ESV) in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

  1. Final Deliverance and Union to Come

Hebrews 9:28 (ESV) so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Atonement in the Human Heart

Sin DISCONNECTS……..Atonement RECONNECTS. Sin COSTS……………….Atonement PAYS.

Sin ENSLAVES…………….Atonement FREES. Sin SHAMES………….Atonement EMBOLDENS.

True Atonement Brings Peace

Romans 5:1-2 (ESV) “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

True Atonement Brings Boldness

Hebrews 10:19–22 (ESV) Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

True Atonement Brings Relational Healing

Ephesians 2:14-16 (ESV) For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

True Atonement Brings Mental Wellness

Colossians 1:19–22 (ESV) For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him

The NEED for Atonement:

  1. Between Ourselves and God.
  2. Between Ourselves and Each Other.
  3. Between Ourselves and our own

Devotion: Atonement: Reconciliation Through Christ’s Sacrifice

Scripture Reading:

  • Leviticus 23:26-29 (ESV)
  • Leviticus 16:3-19 (ESV)
  • Hebrews 9:11-14 (ESV)
  • Romans 5:1-2 (ESV)
  • Ephesians 2:14-16 (ESV)

Reflection: Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar—a day dedicated to reconciliation and the removal of sin. As Christians, the concept of atonement is central to our faith, fulfilled completely in Jesus Christ. Atonement is not merely an Old Testament ritual; it is the means by which we are reconciled to God, each other, and even our own hearts.

In the Old Testament, atonement required the high priest to offer sacrifices and perform rituals to cleanse the people of their sins. But these rituals were a foreshadowing of the ultimate atonement that Jesus would provide. As Hebrews 9:12 tells us, Jesus entered the holy places by His own blood, securing eternal redemption for us.

Application:

  1. Reconciliation with God: Reflect on your relationship with God. Are there sins that you need to bring before Him? Remember that Jesus’ sacrifice has made atonement for you. Approach God with confidence, knowing that your sins are forgiven.
  2. Reconciliation with Others: Consider your relationships with others. Is there someone you need to forgive or seek forgiveness from? Atonement through Christ empowers us to reconcile with each other, breaking down walls of hostility.
  3. Reconciliation with Yourself: Are you at peace with yourself? Sin often brings guilt and shame, but atonement in Christ removes this burden. Allow the peace of Christ to fill your heart and mind, freeing you from the chains of sin and shame.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the atonement provided through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We are in awe of the sacrifice He made to reconcile us to You. Help us to live in the freedom that atonement brings—freedom from sin, guilt, and shame. Empower us to reconcile with others and to live in peace with ourselves. May our lives reflect the grace and love that we have received through Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought of the Day: Atonement reconnects what sin has disconnected. It pays the debt, frees the captive, and brings boldness in place of shame.

Engage: Share how the atonement of Christ has transformed your life. Has it brought you peace, boldness, or healing in your relationships? Comment below or share your story with someone today.

Call to Action:

  1. Examine Your Heart: Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal areas in your life where you need reconciliation.
  2. Reach Out: If there is someone you need to reconcile with, take the first step today.
  3. Share the Gospel: The message of atonement is powerful. Share the truth of Christ’s sacrifice with someone who needs to hear it.

Questions/Journal Prompts:

  1. How does understanding atonement deepen your relationship with God?
  2. In what ways has the atonement of Christ impacted your relationships with others?
  3. Reflect on a time when you experienced the peace that comes from knowing your sins are forgiven. How did that change your outlook on life?

Take time to prayerfully consider these questions and journal your responses. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and reflections as you seek to live a life filled with His presence and power.
