Feast of Booths
Leviticus 23:33–36 (ESV) And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 34 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the Lord. 35 On the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. 36 For seven days you shall present food offerings to the Lord. On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the Lord. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work.

Leviticus 23:39–43 (ESV) “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. 40 And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. 41 You shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It is a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. 42 You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths, 43 that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”

Deuteronomy 16:13–15 (ESV) “You shall keep the Feast of Booths seven days, when you have gathered in the produce from your threshing floor and your winepress. 14 You shall rejoice in your feast, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow who are within your towns. 15 For seven days you shall keep the feast to the Lord your God at the place that the Lord will choose, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful.

Deuteronomy 16:16–17 (ESV) “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Booths. They shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed. 17 Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.

Feast of Booths in Israel History
1 Kings 8 – Solomon dedicates the Temple
Ezra 3 – Returned Exiles rebuild the Temple under Joshua and Zerubbabel.
Nehemiah 8 – The people listen to Ezra read the law during this feast which leads to a national revival.

The Lord Promises to Dwell:
Zechariah 2:10–11 (ESV) Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord. 11 And many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you.

End Time Fulfillment:
Zechariah 14:16–19 (ESV) Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths. 17 And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain on them. 18 And if the family of Egypt does not go up and present themselves, then on them there shall be no rain; there shall be the plague with which the Lord afflicts the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths. 19 This shall be the punishment to Egypt and the punishment to all the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths.

The 8th Day

Numbers 29:35–36 (ESV) “On the eighth day you shall have a solemn assembly. You shall not do any ordinary work, 36 but you shall offer a burnt offering, a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord: one bull, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish…

Simchat Beit HaShoeivah
“Rejoicing of the Water-Drawing House”
During Sukkot, a priest would draw water from the Pool of Siloam in a golden pitcher and bring it to the Temple. (Isaiah 12:3)
The water was then poured out on the altar, accompanied by the chanting of Psalms and the waving of the Four Species of plant life used during Sukkot.
This symbolized the prayers for rain and a good harvest for the coming year. (Zechariah 14:18)

Isaiah 12:3 (ESV) With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

Joel 2:28–29 (ESV) “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

Feast of Booths in the New Testament
John 7:2–3 (ESV) Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.

John 7:37–39 (ESV) On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Acts 18:3 (ESV) and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.

Every Christian a “Tent”
2 Corinthians 5:1–4 (ESV) For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

The Final Dwelling of Man:
Revelation 7:14–15 (ESV) I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.

Devotion: Trusting God’s Provision Through Every Season

Scripture Readings:
Leviticus 23:42-43: “Live in temporary shelters for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

John 7:37-38: “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.'”

Reflection:
The Feast of Booths (or Tabernacles) is a powerful reminder of God’s provision during Israel’s wilderness journey. As the Israelites lived in temporary shelters, they were constantly reminded of their dependence on God for survival. This ancient celebration points forward to Jesus, who offers us living water, the ultimate provision for our spiritual thirst.

Just as the Israelites trusted God through their wilderness season, we are called to trust Him in every season of our lives—whether in times of abundance or uncertainty. Jesus’ invitation in John 7 is timeless: if we are spiritually thirsty, He is our source of life, peace, and strength. The same God who led His people through the wilderness leads us today, offering sustenance and shelter when we rely on Him.

Application:
Acknowledge God’s Provision: Reflect on the ways God has provided for you, both in physical and spiritual matters. Even in times of uncertainty, trust that He is your ultimate provider.

Drink from the Living Water: Jesus offers to satisfy your spiritual thirst. In prayer, ask Him to fill you with His Spirit, refreshing your soul with His presence.

Embrace the Temporary: Like the Israelites in temporary shelters, remember that our lives on this earth are temporary. Keep an eternal perspective, knowing that God is preparing a home for you in His eternal Kingdom.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your faithfulness in every season. Just as You provided for the Israelites in the wilderness, I trust You to meet my needs today. Help me to come to You when I am spiritually thirsty and to rest in Your shelter and care. Lord Jesus, fill me with Your living water and guide me as I walk through the temporary trials and blessings of this life. I thank You that in You, I have everything I need. Amen.

Thought of the Day:
God’s provision never runs dry. He is our source in every season—whether we are wandering through the wilderness or living in abundance.

Engage:
Call to Action: Today, take a moment to acknowledge one way God has provided for you recently, whether in a tangible or spiritual way. Write it down or share it with someone as a testimony of God’s faithfulness.

Share: Reflect on a time when God led you through a difficult season. Share this testimony with someone to encourage them to trust God in their current circumstances.

Questions/Journal Prompts:
What are some recent examples of God providing for your needs?
How can you trust God more fully in a current area of uncertainty or “wilderness” in your life?
In what ways do you need to experience the living water that Jesus offers today?
How does keeping an eternal perspective change the way you view your daily struggles and temporary challenges?
What steps can you take to remind yourself of God’s faithfulness during difficult seasons?

Take time to prayerfully consider these questions and journal your responses. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and reflections as you seek to live a life filled with His presence and power.
