The Sabbath Year

Leviticus 25:1–5 (ESV) The Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you, the land shall keep a Sabbath to the Lord. 3 For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 You shall not reap what grows of itself in your harvest, or gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land.

Leviticus 25:23 (ESV) “The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me.

Leviticus 25:6–7 (ESV) The Sabbath of the land shall provide food for you, for yourself and for your male and female slaves and for your hired worker and the sojourner who lives with you, 7 and for your cattle and for the wild animals that are in your land: all its yield shall be for food.

Deuteronomy 15:1-6 (ESV) “At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor. He shall not exact it of his neighbor, his brother, because the LORD’s release has been proclaimed. 3 Of a foreigner you may exact it, but whatever of yours is with your brother your hand shall release. 4 But there will be no poor among you; for the LORD will bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess— 5 if only you will strictly obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all this commandment that I command you today. 6 For the LORD your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.

Deuteronomy 31:10–13 (ESV) And Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”

2 Chronicles 36:21 (ESV) to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

The Year of Jubilee

Leviticus 25:8–10 (ESV) “You shall count seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, so that the time of the seven weeks of years shall give you forty-nine years. 9 Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. 10 And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan.

Leviticus 25:11–12 (ESV) That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of itself nor gather the grapes from the undressed vines. 12 For it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. You may eat the produce of the field.

Leviticus 25:13–17 (ESV) “In this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his property. 14 And if you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another. 15 You shall pay your neighbor according to the number of years after the jubilee, and he shall sell to you according to the number of years for crops. 16 If the years are many, you shall increase the price, and if the years are few, you shall reduce the price, for it is the number of the crops that he is selling to you. 17 You shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God, for I am the Lord your God.

Leviticus 25:18–22 (ESV) “Therefore you shall do my statutes and keep my rules and perform them, and then you will dwell in the land securely. 19 The land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and dwell in it securely.

20 And if you say, ‘What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we may not

sow or gather in our crop?’ 21 I will command my blessing on you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years. 22 When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating some of the old crop; you shall eat the old until the ninth year, when its crop arrives.

Principles of the Jubilee

(Day of Atonement)

Prophetic Jubilee

Isaiah 61:1–3 (ESV) The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

Luke 4:16–30 (ESV) And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

2 Corinthians 6:2 (ESV) For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Refreshing Through Repentance

Acts 3:19–21 (ESV) Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

The Gospel is our Favorable Offer

We REPENT of our sins.

Acts 2:38 (ESV) And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins

We are RELEASED of our sins/debts through Christ’s blood.

Romans 6:22 (ESV) But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.

We are at REST in the Lord (not working FOR our salvation but FROM our salvation).

Matthew 11:28 (ESV) Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

We are RESTORED to God, to our position Adam had at the first.

Ephesians 1:22–23 (ESV) And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Devotion: Trusting God’s Sovereignty through the Sabbath Year and Jubilee

Scripture Readings:

Leviticus 25:1-7 (ESV): “For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord.”
Leviticus 25:8-10 (ESV): “You shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan.”

Reflection:

The principles of the Sabbath Year and the Year of Jubilee found in Leviticus 25 are powerful lessons in trust, provision, and restoration. God commanded His people to let the land rest every seventh year, a radical act of trust. They had to rely on Him to provide for their needs, teaching them that He is the true provider. The Year of Jubilee, observed every fiftieth year, went even further, granting liberty to captives, restoring property, and resetting relationships. This divine rhythm of rest, renewal, and restoration points us to Christ, who offers us ultimate freedom from sin and spiritual debt.

Trusting God means releasing control over our work, finances, and relationships, recognizing that He holds everything in His hands. The Sabbath Year and Jubilee invite us to rest in His provision, knowing that when we obey and honor Him, He will meet our needs. In our fast-paced world, where success and productivity are often idols, these ancient principles remind us to trust in God’s sovereignty and embrace the freedom Christ offers.

Application:

Rest in God’s Provision: Like the Israelites during the Sabbath Year, we are called to trust God completely, especially in seasons of rest or uncertainty. Reflect on areas where you are striving and where God is calling you to rest and trust in Him.
Seek Restoration: The Year of Jubilee symbolizes restoration in relationships, finances, and identity. Is there an area in your life where you need restoration? Ask God to help you forgive, let go of burdens, and trust Him to restore what is broken.
Walk in Freedom: Christ is our Jubilee. Through His sacrifice, we are released from the debt of sin and are restored to our rightful place as children of God. Are there areas in your life where you are still carrying burdens that Christ has already freed you from?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your provision, rest, and restoration. Teach me to trust You in every area of my life—professionally, personally, and spiritually. Help me to release control, knowing that You are the ultimate provider. Thank You for the freedom and restoration I have through Jesus, my Jubilee. Restore what is broken in my life and guide me to walk in the peace and rest that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought of the Day:

God’s provision is more than enough. In Christ, we are freed from debt and restored to our rightful identity as children of God.
