About This Project
People love the God of their own emotions, who will vote the way they vote or feel the way they feel; the God of their own making. However, the Lord says, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) This week we look at the KING God provided for HIMSELF…our King.
Key Verse: 1 Samuel 16:1
“I have provided for myself a king.”
Theme: Transitioning from the Kingdom of Saul to the Kingdom of God
Scriptures studied:
1 Samuel 16:1-23, 17:28-29; 1 Corinthians 3:1; Psalm 14:1-5; Isaiah 53; Matthew 11:2-3; Ephesians 2:8-10; Matthew 5:8, 15:19; Luke 6:43-45; Matthew 12:33; Ezekiel 36:26; John 7:38, Isaiah 61:3; James 1:17 ; Lamentations 3:23
Further Study:
- Primogeniture = (1) the state of being the firstborn child (2) the right of succession belonging to the firstborn child
- The phrase “beauty for ashes”= a crown for ashes, i.e. a crown of glory in lieu of the ashes of repentance which it was customary to sprinkle upon the head
- The phrase “oil of joy for mourning” = or the anointing of the Spirit in lieu of that plenteousness of tears which naturally belonged to mourners; also found in Psalm 45:7
- Other biblical stories to study: Abel, Isaac, Jacob, Ephraim
- Psalms written and sung by David: Psalm 23; Psalm 42; Psalm 63
Points to note:
The Kingdom of Saul has consequences:
- Demanding
- Disobedient to God
- Seeks his own glory
- Spirit of fear and insecurity
Who QUESTIONS Jesus?
- Parent
- Brothers
- Physically
- Preceding Prophet
The Kingdom of David:
- Serving
- Trusting
- Heart for God
- Spirit of Worship
Symbolism in these passages:
- The term “harmful spirit” which is mentioned throughout 1 Samuel 16 is an indication that before the Lord departed from King Saul, King Saul departed from the Lord.
Recognize the Following:
- People love the God of their own emotions who will vote the way they vote–the God of their own making.
- You are not saved by your own strength and determination. You are saved by God’s grace and power.
- God is after our hearts; He comes to change us from the inside out.
- God can use anything, even evil, to prepare the way for His promised deliverance; His promised King.
- If you want to change the atmosphere of your life: worship God.
Questions to consider:
- Who is the rejected son a picture of?
- Can you contribute to your own salvation? (save yourself?)
- Have you ever been guilty of “Image Management”?
- Have you ever seen God use a situation that seemed to be bad for His glory?
- Are you ready to change your “atmosphere” through worshiping God?
