As a pastor I caution you against skipping this episode because chances are good that your faith is being affected by either a church the world wants or a church the world needs, and you want to make sure that the church that you’re in is doing what it should be doing for your spiritual growth!

What’s the difference between the Church the world wants and the Church the world needs? We are going to examine the state of the Church in a post-COVID America.

Malachi 1:10 (ESV) Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand.

1 Corinthians 9:8–12 (ESV) Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Galatians 6:6–8 (ESV) Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

1 Timothy 5:17–18 (ESV) Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”

Matthew 5:13 (ESV) “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

1 Timothy 4:13–16 (ESV) Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers

1 Corinthians 2:4–5 (ESV) and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

2 Corinthians 4:2–3 (ESV) But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.             

2 Peter 1:16 (ESV) For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Jude 17–23 (ESV) But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

 

 

 

Points to Note:

  • There’s a church the world wants and then the church the world needs.
  • There’s the Christians the world wants and then Christians the world needs.
  • You cannot please those who refuse to believe!
  • The church the world wants cannot exist!
  • Paying your pastor is Biblical.
  • Hold the line! Now is not the time to break!
  • What the world calls declining, God calls refining.

 

Pastoral Thoughts:

  • The Church has a couple of options: go with the culture or go with the Gospel.
  • If you don’t stand for Truth, you’re inevitably dying.
  • A Church without conviction is a Church without Christ.
  • If you take God, Truth, and tithing out of the mix, you have nothing.
  • Salvation is a miracle and God does not rely on our clever arguments.
  • The Church the world needs is a Church that believes the Bible is true, Jesus is the only way to heaven, we need to repent of our sins, and we serve, give, and support the mission of the Gospel.

 

Questions to Consider:

  1. Are you being swayed by culture?
  2. Do you believe the Bible is inerrant and inspired?
  3. Are you reading and studying the Scriptures every day?
  4. Do you find yourself trying to argue people into the Gospel?
  5. Are you spending time and energy chasing after those who have left the Church?
  6. Are you regularly attending a Gospel preaching Bible-believing church?
  7. Are you serving in and giving to the mission of the Gospel in your local church?
  8. Are you regularly practicing prayer and fasting and asking the Lord to pour out His Spirit one more time?
