What moved the disciples from learning to laboring?
“Not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.” JFK’s moon-shot line is memorable—but Jesus’ sending in Matthew 9:35–10:15 is eternal. Moved by compassion, He calls for laborers, equips the Twelve with authority, and sends them to announce the nearness of the Kingdom. This episode marks a turning point: spectators become participants.
Key Themes in Matthew 9:35–10:15
- Compassion that moves to mission (9:35–36): Jesus is “moved” at the core of His being for the harassed and helpless—sheep without a shepherd. True mission starts in God’s heart.
- The harvest and urgency (9:37–38): “The harvest is plentiful” carries the weight of both salvation and judgment (cf. Matt. 13:39–43). We pray earnestly—and often become the answer to our own prayers.
- From disciples to apostles (10:1–4): Ordinary, diverse people (fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot) are called and authorized to do extraordinary work in Jesus’ name.
- Near-field mission and clear targeting (10:5–6): Start at home; God’s mission often begins where you already have relationships (cf. Acts 1:8).
- Kingdom message and Kingdom works (10:7–8): Proclaim the nearness of the Kingdom; demonstrate the Kingdom’s compassion—heal, cleanse, deliver.
- Dependence and integrity (10:9–10): Trust God’s provision; offer the gospel freely because salvation is God’s free gift.
- Wisdom in response (10:11–15): Seek receptive homes; if rejected, “shake the dust” and move on—urgency without hostility.
Insights from the Episode
Pastor Tim highlights a “learner → laborer” transition and distills seven essentials for Gospel mission:
- Teamwork (go two by two)
- Target (start at home)
- Testify (proclaim as you go)
- Touch lives (serve, pray, help)
- Trust God’s provision
- Team up (form local partners)
- Turn the page (move on when rejected)

- Proclaim and Demonstrate the Kingdom – The Gospel must be both preached and lived out through healing, deliverance, and compassionate acts.
- Dependence on God’s Provision – The mission requires radical trust in God’s supply, reflecting the free gift of salvation and the grace of the Kingdom.
- Accountability for Rejecting the Gospel – Shaking off the dust is a warning that rejecting Christ brings greater judgment.

📖 Are You Treasuring the Right Things?
In a world consumed by fear, comparison, and control, Jesus offers a better way. In Kingdom Come Part 13, Pastor Tim Hatch unpacks Matthew 6:19–34 to show why money, possessions, and anxiety are deeply spiritual matters—and how believers today can find freedom in God’s Kingdom.

Jesus offers you freedom. Not through more wealth, but through more trust. Let this teaching remind you that you are worth more than birds, more beautiful than lilies, and cared for by a loving Father who knows exactly what you need.
📖 Key Takeaways:
- Treasure reveals trust: Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (v. 21).
- The eye is the lamp: What you focus on fuels either spiritual light or darkness (v. 22–23).
- Anxiety is a spiritual indicator: Jesus connects worry with misplaced trust (v. 25–32).
- God knows what you need: Birds don’t stress, lilies don’t toil, yet God provides for them (v. 26–30).
- Kingdom-first living: Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness (v. 33).
Pastor Tim illustrates how modern culture—especially digital distractions and materialistic mindsets—contribute to our anxiety. He challenges us to shift our focus, examine where our money is going, and trust God’s faithful provision.
🔑
Application for Today:
-
Audit Your Spending
Take 15 minutes this week to review your bank or credit card statement. Where is your money going? What does it say about your heart’s priorities? Use this as an opportunity to realign your finances with Kingdom values.
-
Guard Your Eyes
Limit your social media consumption to 30 minutes a day for one week. Pay attention to how this impacts your anxiety, focus, and spiritual clarity. What you set before your eyes shapes your inner life.
-
Pray Through Your Worry
Every time anxiety creeps in, stop and pray this simple prayer:
“Father, I surrender this worry to You. I trust that You see me, You know my needs, and You will provide.”
Repeat as often as needed—and let peace replace pressure.
-
Take a Step Toward Generosity
Whether it’s tithing, blessing someone in need, or supporting Gospel work—take one intentional step this week to be generous. Not because God needs your money—but because you need to train your heart to trust Him.
-
Fix Your Focus
Write down Matthew 6:33 and place it where you’ll see it every day:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Let this verse guide your decisions, mindset, and daily direction.

📖 Kingdom Come Part 12: Practicing Kingdom Faith– Matthew 6:1–18 Bible Study
True Devotion Doesn’t Need an Audience
In a world that constantly demands we perform—on social media, in our communities, and even within the church—Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:1–18 confront us with eternal wisdom: “Beware of practicing your righteousness before others in order to be seen by them.”
In Kingdom Come Episode 12, Pastor Tim Hatch dives deep into Jesus’ teaching on giving, praying, and fasting—three essential spiritual disciplines that had become performance-based rituals in first-century Judaism. These practices are still essential for today’s believers, but Jesus challenges us to check our motives and guard against using them to gain human approval.
Grab your Kingdom Come journal and join us for a deep dive into Christ’s radical call to live like the Father. Available in any Waters Church book store or online at https://timhatchlive.com/journal

- The Enemy of Peace is Performance
A performance-based faith is exhausting. Jesus invites us into a relationship with God that prioritizes authenticity over applause.
- Spiritual Disciplines for the Right Audience
Jesus confronts religious hypocrisy and redirects giving (v.2–4), praying (v.5–15), and fasting (v.16–18) to be done “in secret” where the Father sees.
- Understanding the Lord’s Prayer (v.9–13)
Discover a 6-part framework for prayer that keeps us centered on worship, submission, dependence, confession, guidance, and deliverance.
- Modern Application
Whether you’re tempted to flaunt your faith or afraid to engage in spiritual practices, this message calls you back to the heart of devotion—where God’s love and reward await.
- Encouraging Stories
Hear how Amy Carmichael’s brown eyes and Fanny Crosby’s blindness became blessings through divine purpose, illustrating that God knows what we need—better than we do.

📖 Kingdom Come Part 11: Love That Transforms – Matthew 5:21–48 Bible Study
In Kingdom Come Episode 11, Pastor Tim Hatch unpacks Jesus’ most challenging teaching—Matthew 5:21–48—where the call to righteousness goes beyond rule-keeping and penetrates the heart. Jesus confronts anger, lust, revenge, divorce, dishonesty, and even our treatment of enemies. This isn’t about behavior modification—it’s about spiritual transformation. Through this convicting but freeing message, you’ll discover that Jesus doesn’t lower the standard—He fulfills it and invites us to live through His power.
Whether you’re holding a grudge, struggling with lust, or needing reconciliation, this episode will meet you where you are and point you to the only One who can truly transform you from the inside out.
Grab your Kingdom Come journal and join us for a deep dive into Christ’s radical call to live like the Father. Available at https://timhatchlive.com/journal
🔑
Application for Today:
-
Check Your Heart, Not Just Your Habits
It’s easy to measure yourself by what you don’t do—but Jesus is after why you do what you do. Are you harboring resentment, bitterness, lust, or pride under the surface? Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart (Psalm 139:23–24) and expose what needs to change.
-
Pursue Reconciliation Now
Jesus says if you remember someone has something against you, leave your offering and go make it right (v. 23–24). Don’t wait—text, call, write the note. Peace with others reflects the peace God has given you.
-
Guard Your Eyes and Mind
Jesus isn’t condemning attraction but intentional objectification. What you dwell on shapes who you become. Set up boundaries. Make a covenant with your eyes (Job 31:1). Choose purity over instant gratification.
-
Honor Your Commitments and Your Word
In a culture where exaggeration and empty promises are normal, Jesus calls for honesty. Let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no. Live with consistent integrity—whether in your marriage, workplace, or friendships.
-
Choose Grace Over Revenge
Forgiveness isn’t weakness—it’s power under control. If someone offends you, respond like Christ: with love, not retaliation. Jesus teaches us that being wronged is not permission to sin back (Romans 12:17–21).
-
Love the Unlovable
Jesus redefines love as loving your enemies and praying for your persecutors. That coworker, neighbor, or even family member who’s hard to love? That’s your mission field. Love like your Father in heaven loves—freely, sacrificially, and without strings attached.
-
Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
Only Jesus lived this kind of perfection (v. 48). The point isn’t to try harder—it’s to lean into the power of the Holy Spirit and walk in grace, day by day. His righteousness becomes yours through faith.
🎧

📖 Key Takeaways:
-
Righteousness Beyond Religion: Jesus condemns superficial righteousness and calls us to inward transformation.
-
Anger as the Root of Murder: Unchecked emotions grow into destruction—Jesus calls us to reconciliation.
-
Lust and the Heart: Adultery starts long before the act—purity begins with the eyes and the intent.
-
Marriage and Covenant: God values lifelong commitment and calls His people to reflect His faithfulness.
-
Let Your Yes Be Yes: Integrity in speech reveals a heart aligned with truth.
-
Rejecting Retaliation: Kingdom people turn the other cheek and overcome evil with grace.
-
Loving Your Enemies: The pinnacle of Christlikeness—loving and praying for those who persecute you.

📖 Kingdom Come Part 10: Sermon on the Mount Explained – Matthew 5:1–20 Bible Study | Kingdom Come Ep. 10
In this powerful teaching, Pastor Tim Hatch walks us through Matthew 5:1–20—the opening verses of the Sermon on the Mount. These foundational truths reveal the heart of Jesus’ kingdom and what it means to truly be His disciple.
From the Beatitudes to the call to be salt and light, this passage flips worldly values upside down and invites believers into the radical, transformative life of the Kingdom of God. You’ll learn why Jesus never watered down truth to attract the crowd, how true happiness begins with spiritual poverty, and how your identity in Christ sets you apart to make a difference in a broken world.
Jesus not only preached the Law—He fulfilled it. And now, by faith, His righteousness is yours.
Whether you’re a seeker, a new believer, or a seasoned Christian, this episode will challenge and inspire you to evaluate where you stand: Are you in the crowd—or are you a disciple? Join us as we explore the upside-down blessings of the Kingdom and walk in the light of God’s truth.
🔑
Application for Today:
- Take the Beatitude Test
Examine your heart: Are you spiritually poor? Do you mourn over sin? Do you hunger for righteousness? Let God search your soul.
- Live from Identity, Not Effort
You are salt and light. Don’t try to become it—walk in the identity Christ gave you. Be visible, be bold, be holy.
- Expect Rejection, Embrace Joy
Don’t live for the world’s approval. If you’re persecuted for Christ, you’re in good company. Rejoice in your eternal reward.
- Press Toward Righteousness
Hunger for God’s truth and holiness. Don’t relax His commands—honor them through a transformed life.
- Pursue Inner Purity, Not Outer Applause
God looks at the heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to purify your motives, not just your behavior.
- Be a Peacemaker
Don’t just avoid conflict—bring peace through forgiveness, humility, and gospel truth.
- Shine Together with the Church
Don’t isolate. Light shines brightest in community. Be faithful in church, in small group, and in mission.
- Marvel at Grace
Jesus fulfilled the Law for you. Rest in His righteousness, not your own.

📖 Key Takeaways:
- Kingdom Living Flips the Script
Jesus redefines what it means to be “blessed.” True happiness comes from brokenness, humility, hunger for righteousness, mercy, and peace—not power, wealth, or fame.
- The Beatitudes Reveal a Spiritual Journey
They outline a path: from realizing your need for God (poor in spirit) to growing in Christlike character and being persecuted for living righteously.
- Jesus Makes a Clear Distinction
There’s a difference between the crowd, the disciple, and the core. Where are you?
- You Are Salt and Light
You are essential to this world. You preserve truth and bring light. Don’t hide it—shine boldly.
- Jesus Fulfills the Law
He doesn’t abolish God’s Law but embodies it, completes it, and applies it to your life by grace through faith.
- True Righteousness Is Internal
It’s not about external religious performance but internal transformation by the Holy Spirit.
- Faithfulness Will Be Tested
If you live the Kingdom life, expect rejection. But rejoice—great is your reward in heaven.
