No one is too far from God’s grace! The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 isn’t just a list of names—it’s a powerful testimony of redemption, inclusion, and God’s faithfulness. From Abraham to David, from exiles to kings, God was weaving a story that ultimately leads to Jesus.
Matthew 1:1 (ESV) – The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Matthew begins his Gospel by tracing Jesus’ royal lineage back to David and Abraham, showing that:
✔️ Jesus is the promised King (Son of David)
✔️ Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s covenant (Son of Abraham)
➡ Abraham → Isaac → Jacob → Judah & His Brothers
✔️ Abraham – a liar who deceived kings
✔️ Jacob – a deceiver
✔️ Judah – involved in scandalous sin
✔️ Judah’s brothers – sold Joseph into slavery
➡ David → Solomon → Hezekiah → Josiah → Jeconiah (Babylonian Exile)
✔️ Some were faithful (David, Hezekiah)
✔️ Some were wicked (Jeconiah, Manasseh)
✔️ Yet God’s promise never failed!
➡ Zerubbabel → Abiud → Jacob → Joseph (husband of Mary)
Even through exile and silence, God was still working. Jesus was the fulfillment of the waiting.
👑 Tamar – Betrayed, yet included in the Messiah’s line (Genesis 38:6-26)
👑 Rahab – A former prostitute who became a faithful follower of God (Joshua 2:12-14, 6:25)
👑 Ruth – A Moabite woman, once an outsider, brought into the family of God (Ruth 4:9-10)
👑 Bathsheba – Her story was one of scandal, but through her, Jesus came (2 Samuel 11)
From imperfect patriarchs to flawed kings to faithful women, God’s plan remained unchanged—to bring salvation through Jesus.
➡ Matthew repeatedly states, “This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophets…”
✔️ John 5:39, 46 – The Scriptures bear witness about Jesus
✔️ Luke 24:27, 44 – Jesus interpreted all Scripture as pointing to Him
God works through ordinary, broken, and unexpected people to accomplish His Kingdom purposes.
Matthew 1:17 (ESV) – So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
📌 3 sets of 14 (or 6 sets of 7) – A pattern of divine completion.
📌 Jesus is the 7th “week” – The fulfillment of time.
💡 Revelation 11:2 (NLT) – The nations will trample the holy city for 42 months (6×7), pointing forward to Jesus’ return.
