About This Project

I struggle with it.
You struggle with it.
Everybody struggles with it.

It’s called insecurity.

How do you deal with insecurity? And, how do you find your identity? What is God’s plan and purpose for your life?

Today, in First Kings chapter 12 we look at two guys who really did not handle their own insecurities very well.

The Kingdom of Israel divides at First Kings 12 and from this point on our study breaks down into the study of two kingdoms: both are two options for your life.

Kings 1 & 2 Facts:

  • Author: Unkown
  • Genre: Narrative History (400 years).

Theological History of Kings 1 & 2:

  • Begins with David’s end (970 bc), Solomon’s building and ends with national devastation – exile to Babylon (561 bc).
  • Good and Evil kings.
  • Each king has an epitaph… did they follow the Lord or not?
  • True and False Prophets abound.
  • God rules all nations, not just Israel.
  • The Main Theme: There is ONE God in Israel.

Points:

1 Kings 12 Chapter Outline:

  • I. 1–15: Rehoboam’s stupid leadership move
  • II. 16-24: The Nation almost goes to war
  • III.25-33: Jeroboam’s FALSE kingdom.

TWO MEN struggling with INSECURITY:

  • Rehoboam – his youth and inexperience.
  • Jeroboam – his calling and God’s promises.

Rehoboam’s Insecurity:

  • Felt like he had to prove himself.
  • Caused him to listen to fools.

Jeroboam’s Insecurity:

  • Received God’s Word YET failed to believe it.
  • Leveraged created things to secure his own kingdom.
  • Established Idols in the land.
  • The Idols took hold of the people’s hearts
  • RESULT: A syncretized religion that God destroyed.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT INSECURITY?

  • Every stage of life offers a “new” insecurity.
  • Everyone has one right now. (I’m not alone).

WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT IT?

  1. Learn from those who have been there before us (Elders).
  2. Lean into God’s promises again and again.
  3. Lose yourself. Avoid “self-preservation”.

The PRAYER of the INSECURE SAINT:

Father, I have never been here before and I have no idea what I’m doing. But I choose today to trust You, to listen to Your Word and to do what it says even if it hurts or costs me. I believe this moment is temporary and that You give power to the powerless. May your kingdom come and will be done through this season of my life. And may Jesus Christ, Your Son get the GLORY from my STORY. Amen.

Pastoral Thought:

  • Everyone feels insecure about something.
  • Be aware that the devil will afflict you with insecurities and ungodly temptations.
  • The devil can only rehash old lies.
  • The human heart loves to reject Scripture.
  • The Gospel sets us free from insecurity.
  • “If you cannot trust God, you will use religion.” – Dale Ralph Davis

Questions to Consider:

  1. Do you doubt yourself or feel inadequate?
  2. Which Kingdom do you identify with: Judah or Israel?
  3. What is your current insecurity?
  4. What do you when you feel insecure?
