About This Project

God often speaks most clearly in the dark seasons of life- Amen!

In this study of 1 Kings 17 we are going to see a shift from the kings– the political leaders of the nation of Israel, to the prophets that God sends to the nation. It is in these darkest moments for Israel the Elijah comes to center stage.

Remember: it is not the political leaders or the self-imposed dictators of our world that cause God’s plans to be accomplished. They are simply tools in His hand; pawns on His chess board.

It is the Word of God spoken through the prophets and people of God that move the Kingdom of God forward to literally affect every other Kingdom of this world!

Kings 1 & 2 Facts:

  • Author: Unkown
  • Genre: Narrative History (400 years).

Theological History of Kings 1 & 2:

  • Begins with David’s end (970 bc), Solomon’s building and ends with national devastation – exile to Babylon (561 bc).
  • Good and Evil kings.
  • Each king has an epitaph… did they follow the Lord or not?
  • True and False Prophets abound.
  • God rules all nations, not just Israel.
  • The Main Theme: There is ONE God in Israel.

Points:

When God cuts away:

  • Elijah- cut away from Israel/the brook/the raven’s food
  • Israel- cut away from rain/prosperity
  • Widow- cut away from a future
  • Widow’s son- cut away from life

Pastoral Thought:

  • For every 100 men who can trust God in poverty, there is one man who can trust God in prosperity.
  • God is looking for people who rely on Him.
  • God will cut you deeply in order to use you greatly.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Is God enough?
  2. Is God greater than what’s around me or facing me?
  3. Is God able to do more than I realize?
  4. Is God faithful in every season?
